Introduction

People and societies the world over are facing new challenges from fast-advancing technology, sustainability and identity issues arising from globalissaaaaaation. Many nations have to cope with densely populated cities and limited natural resources. Singapore - a small city, country and island with a population of over 4 million and total land area of 699 square kilometres - is no different.

For Singapore to remain relevant and for its people to remain engaged globally, it has to continue to be open to new paradigms, new ideas and new solutions through collaborations between the international and Singapore community.

The Singapore Pavilion at this year's Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition is an expression of Singapore's 'openness' in architecture. By presenting Singapore Built and Unbuilt, the Pavilion brings forth the visions, ideas and thought processes of leading Singapore and international architects. The diverse range of architectural concepts offer unique typologies for existing urban conditions, addressing issues of the urban city in a garden. Each proposal, built or unbuilt, is a paradigm for new Singapore architecture.

The exhibition offers you a glimpse of the future in three growth centres in Singapore - Possibilities at Marina Bay, Perspectives of the City and Prototypes at one-north. It will also take you through an immersive video essay of Singapore, the city in the garden.

Information on the featured projects can be found in this set of postcards that we have produced specially for you as a reference and memento.
